about

Dedrick Asante-Muhammad, Chief of Membership, Policy and Equity at NCRC.org shared some stats, reports, and articles about debt with Dyalekt, MC and director of pedagogy at Pockets Change. Dyalekt turned this info into a song with the help of brokeMC on the beat. We wrote a bazillion versions of this song, with bars about debt that range from foundational understanding, hidden tricks, misinfo, the (often racist) history and tips for how to overcome.

Debt Rules Everything Around Me
Dream about the money
Gotta lotta bills y'all

Ok so here’s the basics/Debt is an obligation
A deferred payment
Your cash is low so we made an arrangement
Stores used to give credit/bars would run up a tab
But only if they trust you and know you’ll pay it back

But its more than that/ Debt is the American dream
It’s the house car and fancy degree that you need
But nowadays employers don’t care about a diploma
They just want to know you got experience in being yoked up

You know what? Debt can be a burden
Especially when black woman are paid like 3/5s of a person
61cents on the dollar to pay for college?
Debt is holding Black Americans hostage

The way of life is gamefied/
If you’re not winning you’re miserable
If you keep it in cash they call you credit invisible
Ellison we owed our ancestors a moral debt
20 percent of Black net worth is worthless

ain’t nothing going on but the rent and a six pack
And and 760 next to 6’2” on a dating app
Still waiting on reparations but I don’t expect them to pay it back
There’s a reason getting out of debt gets you in the black

Debt Rules Everything Around Me
Dream about the money
Gotta lotta bills y'all

Credit was started with bs & rumors
Boomers build up the zoomers
they make em authorized users
We’re socialized to ostracize those maneuvers
Cuz it’s tough to fight for the future and keep an eye on abusers

That’s poor tax and more facts
The war on black banks
From freedman’s to Dodd frank
More than half tanked
We give thanks and praise
The the shanks from snakes
Go fund me and Reddit
When people need to be saved

Look who gets to choose who’s too big to fail
They best friends with the ones who chose who goes to jail
We conversing through commissary they’re reading our mail
It would be hyperbole to call it beyond the pale

Credit scores wasn’t even a thing til 89
Before that they relied on prejudice & spies
A buncha companies who competed until they didn’t
American dreamed up a caste system for richness

None of us know the formula or how they calculate it
But we give the sweat from our brow for this evaluation
It’s a score cuz it’s a game if you’re in debt you’re getting played
but you’re already getting played so get in the game
